Maintaining a 924, 944, 968 or 928: belts, torque tube and little else
Transaxle Porsches have the engine at the front, the gearbox at the rear and a torque tube between the two, and their maintenance is decided in three places: the timing and balance shaft belts, changed every four years or 60,000 km with water pump and rollers; the torque tube and its bearings; and on the 928, the V8's belt, which takes the engine with it if it fails. With those up to date they are among the most reliable Porsches there are.
The table gives a fixed price for the four families, parts and labour included. These are thirty- and forty-year-old cars on which the service is also an inspection: what we find, we tell you before touching it.
What the service checks on a transaxle
- Timing and balance belts, tensioners, rollers and water pump: date and mileage of the last change, and the real condition of all of it.
- Torque tube and bearings: noises and vibration on acceleration and on the overrun.
- Clutch and rear gearbox, manual or automatic; on the 928, also the Mercedes-sourced automatic.
- Cooling and leaks: radiator, thermostat, head gasket on the 2.5 and 3.0, and crankshaft and camshaft seals.
- Brakes, brake fluid, alignment and tyres, and a look at the wheel arches and underside, which is where these cars rust.
