Porsche 928 (1978-1995)
The 928 was the car meant to replace the 911 and ended up living alongside it for seventeen years: aluminium front V8, transaxle, body in aluminium and galvanised steel and a grand touring interior. From the 4.5 with 240 hp it moved to the 4.7 of the S, the 32-valve 5.0 of the S4 with 320 hp, the GT and the 5.4-litre GTS with 350 hp.
It is a complex car that punishes neglect and rewards maintenance. A 928 with its belts up to date and healthy electronics is an extraordinary grand tourer; a neglected one is a list of bills.
What we check on a 928 before selling it
- Timing belt, tensioner and water pump: the failure that destroys the engine. Date, mileage and parts of the last change.
- Torque tube and its centre bearing, clutch on the manuals and automatic gearbox on the rest.
- Cooling and oil leaks: radiator, thermostat, cover gaskets and seals.
- Electronics: instruments, control units, climate control and window lifts. Everything must work.
- Interior and dashboard, which cracks in the sun, and match of options with the Porsche certificate.
