Porsche Boxster type 986 (1996-2004)
The first Boxster is a mid-engined roadster with a flat-six: 2.5 and 204 hp at first, 2.7 and 220 from 2000, and the Boxster S with the 3.2 giving 252 and later 260 hp. It shares much of its mechanicals and the front half of its body with the 996, and it is the car that paid for the modern 911.
Today it is the cheapest way into a Porsche with a flat-six, and one of the best: perfect weight distribution, a benchmark chassis and affordable upkeep. What needs checking is the same as on the 996, and we check it.
What we check on a Boxster 986 before selling it
- <a href="/taller-porsche/reparacion-ims">IMS</a>: intermediate shaft bearing, and if it has been changed, for which one.
- Rear main seal and oil leaks from the engine case and covers.
- Hood: motor, drive cables, fabric and, on early cars, the plastic rear window.
- Radiators behind the front intakes: leaves, corrosion and leaks. Expansion tank.
- Manual or Tiptronic gearbox, clutch and condition of the running gear.
