Porsche 911 type 996 (1998-2005)

The 996 is the first water-cooled 911 and the one that saved Porsche. M96 engine of 3.4 litres and 300 hp, 3.6 and 320 hp from 2002, Tiptronic or six-speed manual, and above it the Turbo with the 420 hp Mezger engine, the GT3 and the GT2. Its headlights, shared with the Boxster, cost it years of prejudice and are now part of its character.

It is the most affordable 911 and the one that most demands a careful purchase. Its two weak points, the intermediate shaft bearing and bore scoring, can be diagnosed and fixed: at Valentín Motors we deal with them every day.

What we check on a 996 before selling it

<a href="/taller-porsche/reparacion-ims">IMS</a>: condition of the intermediate shaft bearing and whether it has been replaced, with which part and when.
<a href="/taller-porsche/bore-scoring">Bore scoring</a>: borescope inspection of the cylinders, above all on the 3.6, and oil consumption analysis.
Rear main seal, air-oil separator and leaks from the engine case.
Cooling: radiators, condensers, expansion tank and thermostat.
Tiptronic or manual, clutch, and on the Turbo the condition of both turbos and the intake system.
