Porsche Boxster and Cayman type 987 (2005-2012)
The second Boxster generation brings the Cayman, the mid-engined coupé many consider the best-balanced Porsche of its time. The first series (2005-2008) uses 2.7 and 3.4 engines, with the Cayman S at 295 hp; the second (2009-2012) moves to direct injection, 2.9 and 3.4 with up to 320 hp, and introduces the PDK. The Boxster Spyder and the Cayman R close the range.
A 987.2 is an engine without IMS and with PDK, with almost no known weak points. A 987.1 is cheaper and needs the same inspection as a 997.1. Knowing which is which is half the purchase.
What we check on a 987 before selling it

- <a href="/taller-porsche/bore-scoring">Bore scoring</a> on the first-series 3.4: borescope inspection and oil consumption.
- PDK on the second series: oil and filter service and cold behaviour.
- Front radiators and condensers, hood on the Boxster and tailgate seals on the Cayman.
- Clutch, brakes, PASM if fitted and match of options with the Porsche certificate.
