Porsche 911 type 964 (1989-1994)
The 964 looks like a classic 911 and is 87 per cent new: 3.6-litre engine with 250 hp, coil-spring suspension, ABS, power steering, four-wheel drive on the Carrera 4 and, for the first time, the Tiptronic automatic. The Turbo, first 3.3 then 3.6, the RS and the Speedster complete the range.
It is the last 911 with the original silhouette and the first that drives like a modern car. That is why it is rising in value and why it pays to buy well: the engine's teething troubles should already be sorted on any serious car.
What we check on a 964 before selling it
- Oil leaks at the base of the cylinders: the first engines left without gaskets and many have since been corrected. We check which.
- Dual-mass flywheel: noises at idle and vibration. The original Freudenberg unit gave trouble; the LUK one does not.
- Timing chain tensioners, valve covers and the condition of the fan and its bearing.
- Suspension: bushes, dampers and alignment. Tiptronic: shifts and leaks on the cars that have it.
- Body and originality: retractable spoiler, bumpers and match with the Porsche certificate.
