Maintaining a 911 Turbo: from the 930 to the 992, forced induction rules

On a Turbo everything revolves around the turbo: boost pressure, intercooler, the turbo's own cooling and the oil that lubricates it, which works hotter than on a naturally aspirated car. A 930 with a tired turbo and a 992 with a wastegate actuator out of tolerance are different problems with the same root: nobody looked at the forced induction system at the service.

The table covers ten generations, from the four-speed 930 to the 992 Turbo with PDK, at a fixed price with parts and labour. The Turbo shares its body with the Carrera and almost nothing else, and the price takes that into account.

What the service checks on a 911 Turbo

  • Turbo, wastegate and blow-off valves: boost pressure, shaft play and oil leaks. On the 930, also the intercooler and its hoses.
  • Oil and filter with oil suited to turbo temperatures, and cooling: radiators, pump and thermostat, which work harder on a Turbo.
  • Clutch and gearbox, manual or PDK, and four-wheel drive from the 993: transfer case, propshaft and front differential.
  • Brakes: Turbos carry the biggest brakes of their generation and wear them at their own pace. Brake fluid included.
  • Alignment and tyres: wide sizes and fast rear wear, and on the 930, a check that the geometry has not moved.
