Maintaining a Boxster or a Cayman: mid-engine, same rules as the 911
Boxster and Cayman share their engine and much of their mechanicals with the 911 of their era, and therefore the same care: IMS and rear main seal on the 986 and 987.1, bore scoring on the first-series 3.4, PDK from the 987.2, four-cylinder turbo on the 718. What changes is access: the engine sits in the middle and the hood, on the Boxster, is one more thing to check.
The table gives a fixed price per generation, parts and labour included. On a 25-year-old 986 and on a 718 under warranty the service has little in common, and the price reflects it.
What the service checks on a Boxster or Cayman
- 986 and 987.1: <a href="/taller-porsche/reparacion-ims">IMS</a>, rear main seal and leaks from the air-oil separator.
- Radiators and condensers behind the front intakes: leaves, corrosion and leaks. It is where these cars suffer most.
- Boxster hood: motor, cables and fabric; on the 986, the plastic rear window.
- 987.2, 981 and 718: PDK service, stored codes and, on the 718, turbo boost pressure.
- Brakes, brake fluid, alignment and tyres, with the wear pattern typical of a mid-engined car.
